OCULUS QUEST ANIMATED WARNINGS
THE ASK
Facebook and Oculus teamed up with We Are Royale and myself to concept, design, and bring to life these animated warnings. A very important part of getting acquainted with one’s Quest and Laguna headsets include animated warnings. While being informative these sequences also needed to be entertaining. Facebook and Oculus asked us to elevate and evolve the warnings from illustrative animations to 3 dimensional characters and sequences.
THE CONCEPT & STRATEGY
The VR experience is a spatial one. This brought on the idea that our characters and worlds should also be dimensional in these warnings. It made sense to make the transition from 2D to 3D, to better reflect the product and brand. This was why we moved forward with visually rethinking these pieces to revolve around the diverse, social, interactive, and immersive qualities of the Quest and the Rift S. To differentiate the virtual worlds from the real world, the art direction was pushed towards keeping the real world in shades of gray shaped with brand colored lights and reserving bright vibrant worlds for the experiences and environments in VR.
OCULUS RIFT S ANIMATED WARNINGS
MY ROLE
From start to finish, I was deeply involved in the process. It started with creating a treatment, pitching the style of characters, and forming the look of how the animated warnings should be refreshed. I led the team to conceptualize and design diverse characters that varied in age with their charming pets. My role consisted of overall art and animation direction, visualizing both the real-world spaces and the virtual worlds, working with the team to develop the 3D characters, creating matte paintings, and working with the leads to oversee the work in 3D, compositing, and animation.
THE OUTCOME
It all came together to create these informative and visually striking pieces. The animated warnings were shown at the start of using the VR headsets for every user each time, so the work reached many users. These two videos became a foundation and set a visual system and direction for many other animated warnings to come. Based on what was established, We Are Royale has created at least 10 different campaigns for Oculus since 2019. Lastly, we were able to push diversity in our characters and include the studio pets within the pieces!
