OTHER: A BRIEF HISTORY OF AMERICAN XENOPHOBIA

THE ASK

Densho and Movement Content, approached a few artists including myself to design for an educational short film on the history of American Xenophobia. The United Sates is a “nation of immigrants,” but there are a lot of layers and history to it all. The ask was to create visuals that would capture the viewer while staying true historic facts and beats that the script outlined.

THE CONCEPT

In order to bring change, we must face our history. With that, history can be seen as an outline and is written over time. This thread of history connects the narrative together. This line, based on a timeline, would animated, create other visuals, become the word “xenophobia” and then unravel again to lead the viewer’s eyes.

MY ROLE

I storyboarded, designed, illustrated, and created type layouts for the whole second half of the script. In order to help visualize the script as illustrations, I explored various visual interpretations to make sure all of it reflected the script and carried the narrative well.

THE OUTCOME

It was amazing to see the piece spread and shared in so many ways. The film was shown on Local Sightings 2020. “Other”: A Brief History of American Xenophobia was used as part of the curriculum for middles schoolers in the Northwest, and it’s currently shared on TedEd.
